A tiny pup around two months old, weak, sick, brought to my school by a student of grade 9 asking me whether I want to take him. Her parents wanted to leave him on the road, I immediately extended my hands and he melted into me, that was the moment I felt that I would do anything for him.

My demons
An agonising, soul shattering and haunting heart break, immediately followed by sudden loss of my father. Of all the internal demons, these were indestructible, a herculean effort. I was drowning in my sorrow, yet I had to smile, display strength, be an emotional anchor for my mother. Tears were swallowed, only allowed to flow in solitude, in the showers. Pretence sometimes becomes a reality. My conscious reality was of composure, a headmistress of our family-owned institution, a teacher, a doting daughter, and a loving sister. Suppressed tears and pain, created terrible monsters within who loved to come out and play in the darkness of the night. Elusive sleep, insanity of silence, trickling terror of loneliness, silence was the enemy, still is, YouTube videos began filling the silence, the videos did not matter, the void had to be filled, silence had to be broken. I slept, not the peaceful, relaxing sleep, broken, disturbed and chaotic. Silence woke me up, terrorising me, the monsters were real, very real.
The saviour
Two years later, watching my mother grieve, break, come back and repeat the cycle. Watching her lose herself, become weaker, filled me with fear, a fear that I had not known before. I just wanted to break too, fall, it would be easier, it would be simple, but that was a privilege I did not dare have. Drawing strength where I had none, pushing, just pushing. Little did I know that my prayers were being answered, he arrived, a little bundle, my baby, my saviour.
Souls meet at last

In my arms he melted, my heart trembled, I felt like a mother, I was a mother, even before the girl uttered the magic words of ‘Would you take him?’, my answer was “Yes”. It could not have been anything other anyway, meeting my soul for the first time, nay, for the nth time again. I may not have known this in the physical plane, but felt it in every pore, every cell. All I thought at that moment was that he was here to change my life, he did, he does. The first couple of days were spent fervently looking for veterinary clinics to treat him, he wouldn’t eat. My mother and sister were really afraid of losing him, he was too weak, on IV, afraid of the pain this would cause. I said, “Even if he had only a day to live, I would want his day to be filled with so much love and care”, that was Dharma and our Dharma was to love him and love we did. On the third day he started to eat, my chest was his bed, I did not dare move, I did not realise that the void was being filled, he chose my heart as his resting place and he began healing my heart. The demons were still there, but their playground was shrinking.
Hope breaking in
Snow white, pink nose, tiny paws, a pointy hairless tail, an Indian Spitz, filled with emotional intelligence, he ran around the house, he ran the house. The change at home was unbelievable, chaotic and charged. Home was only a place to come rest, pretend to rest, only loss visible, but now it seemed different, transformed, a new energy.
All our thoughts were for him, his toys, his food, his medicine. We carried him to school every day because we couldn’t leave him home, we did not want to leave him home. He was a high jumper, jumping straight into your arms. He learnt to open doors just by watching me open it, a very naughty pup, chewing charging cables, earphones. Every time he chewed my mother’s charger, I would replace it with mine, countless chargers later, he stopped breaking things. He loved when the Amazon delivery person brought packages and handed it to him, proudly bringing the package inside. He became our little helper sometimes in the kitchen, husking coconuts with excitement. His tiny paws brought love, brought hope.

When mother made fun of his hairless and straight tail, it upset me a little. Once when he had chewed off my mother’s spectacles, she was really annoyed. I scolded Snow and told him I was angry and he understood how upset I was, he lay on my arm, closer to my heart, didn’t move an inch the whole night. It was his way of letting me know he understood and how sorry he was, how much he loved me. My heart ached, an unconditional promise and love in that closeness, I realised he was my soul. In that moment nothing else mattered. That night I told him that he is the love of my life, my soul. He moved closer to my heart like he wanted to join all the broken parts of my heart. He did not know that the parts had begun mending.
Snowy blossomed, his tail became fluffy, like he wanted to make my mother happy, he did, all the while following his Dharma, healing emotions, mending hearts, building a love and laughter filled home. No drama, no pronouncements, no declarations, just Snowy being Snowy. My mother calls him Shankara, adoringly, name of our God, a Yogi, a Cosmic dancer, a Guru, it was not planned, but I think it fits him perfectly.
Sorrow and trauma had broken a lot in me, taken more than I ever thought possible, but now there was more love and patience in my heart. The silence did not scare me now, monsters were still around, but I was no longer alone.
